Couch Potato

Fiday we said hello to our new DVR. Woot. I was sick this weekend, so I had a perfect excuse to really learn the ins and outs of my new toy. We got it as part of our new ATT cable service (we had Dish, but went with this because it had more bag for the buck). On a side note Jamey is VERY upset that AT&T is moving it's headquarters to Dallas from San Antonio (long long story--but he thinks it's the worst idea ever one that AT7T will be paying for in spades--I'll let him explain it in the comments).

I am loving the video on demand too--I got to watch some old episodes of Dr. Who...woot. Although some die hard purists might claim Tom Baker was the best...I really love David Tennent (he wear a kilt!) and the wonderous FX of the modern Dr. Who. The VOD also has the kids' show as well so I can easily shut them up. Smirk.

This weekend I recorded and will keep The Goonies and My Big Fat Greek Wedding--they were both on at the same time. Love these movies; and I get to watch them over and over.

Yes, I need to chill.

In other news: I am feeling much better. Jamey has jury duty plus a reset...this equals him spending the night in his department and I should see him tomorrow evening. So it's just me and Kim against the kids.

I suppose I ought to drag myself away from the TV and do some dishes. After all I can pause it.

A Happy Suprise

Tuesday was Jamey's birthday (I'm 6 months older than him and I have spent 6 months enduring taunts from him about how old I am)...we came home from the Silver Stars to this:

It was very very sweet--and a mystery.

Now he's thirty too. HA! Welcome to adulthood--grin.

They decorated very well...it took us a solid day to figure out who the decorator was.

It was our friend's T and R (two over the hill fogeys themselves).

Jamey had a quiet low key birthday. We went to see a Silver Stars game where I had arranged a special surprise on the jumbo-tron. It didn't cost anything (which is what he wanted) and it was something different and unexpected for him. And of course generated birthday wishes all around from our Silver Stars friends. The Silver Stars were playing the Houston Comets...we lost, but one of Micci's favourite (former) Silver Stars players now plays for the Comets, Shannon "Pee Wee" Johnson. On our way out of the arena (we stay late to do some cheering and such) we saw Pee Wee leaving out of the same door we were about to leave out of. Because Mic was being shy, I called out to her, and told her how much Micci missed her playing for the team and that she is his favourite all time player. Jamey managed to push Mic up to her so he could shake her hand and say hi. It was a very sweet moment.

And then we cam home to the aformentioned very sweet birthday surprise.

Yes, I Melted

Still hot AND I have been super busy. AND it's been a little over a week since the kids doctor appointments and guess what: we are all getting sick! Right_on_schedule!!!!! I have been up since 6 am because of a horrible sore throat. Grrr. I didn't even know the sun was up that early. Grin. So, I got some floor moppin' done (with my handy dandy homemade swiffer cloths).

In this week of all busy weeks, Mic lost his first tooth. Jamey says he looks like a punk--I think he looks adorable...and so grown up! He was very brave and didn't cry. Heck, I didn't even have to hold him down...just a few twists with a face cloth and out it came. Although he was a bit alarmed at all the blood.

Mic's first Baby Tooth-GONE!

Ahhh, I remember this tooth--it was his first--my nipples remember it well. Youch!

Mic's first Baby Tooth

And the tooth fairy came and was a bit over the top when it came to dispensing of the fairy dust--I think she had too many beans for dinner.

Tooth Fairy Came! A lot...

She was very generous in the gifting department and left Mic a very sparkly dollar bill. Mic was a tad disappointed--he was expecting a quarter (like in all his cartoons). I told him that the tooth fairy gives more for the first tooth.

Tooth Fairy Came!

Mic was also confused at first with the fairy dust. "What IS this stuff Mom???"

Tooth Fairy Came! All over...

We are still finding fairy dust all over the place. Oops.

Entering the 21st Century...Finally

So Birdy has finally entered the 21st century by getting a cellphone. I resisted the urge to call everyone I know. Smirk. AND I even know my phone number already (which is saying something because I still don't know my husband's cell phone number).

The kids had their annual well check ups today. Mic did fine and had a great time getting his blood pressure taken (he LOVES that). Lorelei--however--freaked the shit out. Literally. So after a quick wash and change...and going commando since idiot momma forgot the diaper bag...I carried a screaming, thrashing little girl into the exam room. Lorelei fought getting weight, height measured, everything little thing the nurse and doctor did (she was not impressed with the doctor's light trick with the nose/ear scopy thing). Sigh. How did you thing she did with her shots?

Yeah I felt so bad about it I bought her a new dolly.

Mic was put out--what about me??! Oops (I did some quick thinking), well Mic I did buy you two watches yesterday...

Which, I do believe may be a mistake. Sure he's learning to tell time (one watch is analog, the other digital), but he let's us know with fervent wonder that another minute has past and it is NOW 5:36!!! It was cute for the first hmm 4 minutes--an hour later not_so_much.

Oh and today--it was a 101 at the airport--I read the thermostat in our car at a 106 F. Frak! It's not even summer yet (okay the first day of summer is tomorrow, but still--it's not even AUGUST!). So if y'all don't hear from me--I may have melted. I am also using this vile heat to convince Jamey that I need to buy sun dresses lots and lots of sun dresses. It's slowly working....also helps that I don't wear a bra with most of my sun dresses. Smirk.

Summer Fun

Summer brings out the creepy crawly bitey bugs. I took picturs of Mic's bug bites that I mentioned yesterday.

Here is what it looked like last night.

Here is what it looks like this morning after two doses of the oral and topical antibiotic.

And here is what the infected leg looks like beside his healthy one.

The pediatrician said if it doesn't look better by Friday to bring him back in.

Fun fun Summer!! Word to the bitey bugs...next time--try washing your mouth parts with some antibacterial wash!

Where Have I Gone?

My sister Kim is here. It's been really nice spending sisterly time with her. She's 12 years younger than I so our relationship has always been a mother/daughter one. Now that we are both adults I am trying for a sister/sister relationship. So far it's great. She's giving me great help...and no mom I am not treating her like a servant/slave...and I really appreciate her being here.

We had big family drama today. Last night after Jamey and i had a rare date night (thank you Kim!), Mic told me his leg hurt. I saw two spider bites that were really inflamed and hard. I gave him some benedryl...and put him to bed. It was bothering him some more today...but now it was HOT, hard and twice as big as before. Shit. We gave him more benedryl, a double dose and we went off to Anne's house to house sit for a few hours. Well, when she got back we had a "convocation" of Mommies and we all decided it was time to take Mic to the doctor. Poor kid has an infection and on top of that he was over due for some shots so I decided since he was already in pain--might as well get it over with. Poor kid was on the couch all evening moaning about the pain in his leg and in his arm. To be fair to me--he refused all offers of ibuprofen.

Otherwise I have been busy with knitterly stuff (and not really blogging about that either--yes yes bad blogger). I've been stuck in a mire of unfinished projects that seem frozen in time. It's an illusion I know but still--it's the perception. I also have been trying to make some knitting tutorial videos. And Mom amazingly, the house is staying somewhat clean.

I'll leave you with an entertaining video.

Yesterday, we all went swimming with Anne and Seth. And this is Jamey playing toss the boy with Seth.

Memes and Things.

I've seen this meme all over the blogosphere. Its sorta fun and why not.

1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning of the post.
2. Each player answers the questions about themselves in their post.
3. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5-6 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog.
4. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

Questions:

1. What was I doing ten years ago?

Hmm Ten Years ago, I was in Austin was about to make one of the biggest and costliness mistakes of my life and by the end of the summer would tuck my tail between my legs and move to live with my parents in New Mexico the land of entrapment!

2. What are five things on my list to do today?

1. Clean
2. Cook a Meal or two
3. Do Laundry
4. Do Dishes
5. Knit

3. Snacks I enjoy?

Anything chocolate...LOVE me some Cheetos and Doritos

4. Things I Would Do If I Were A Billionnaire?

Hmmm...does that mean I was born one, became on or all of a sudden had it plopped in to my lap? I mean I would NOT be the same person if I had a billion dollars. Course off the top of my head right now, I'd pay off debt, buy a new house (with ma very own yarn studio), buy all the expensive yarn I am currently drooling over (Handmaiden Sea Silk for instance), and then fidn out how I can crash some U2 parties and figure out how to become Bono best good friend. Oh and I would go on TRIPS all the time....Italy, France, Ireland, Wales, Japan!, San Francisco!...Globetrot.

5. Three of my bad habits?

I procrastinate.

I ignore things/events that I should deal with (um yeah read above).

I am a slob...if I was a billionare I would have a maid and a personal assisant/butler guy named Henry.

6. Five places I have lived?

I've lived in way more than 5 so I'll pick the top 5 (in no particular order): San Antonio TX, Austin TX, Germany, Flagstaff AZ, Fort Meade, MD

7. Five jobs I've had?

Carrryout/Casher at HEB, Clerk at Hastings Books, Clerk/Manager of a Hollywood Video, Hostess at Jim's (it's a diner type place), Retirement Plans Specialist at Citibank. And that is IT. Now I am a SAHP and a knit wear designer.

8. How did you name your blog?

Dubh Croi means dark heart in Irish Gaelic. I think it's pretty much self explanatory. I love Gaelic and my heart is a deep dark well. Unknowable.

I am not planning on tagging--hate that--so you if want to participate in this meme--by all means do it and leave me a comment (because I LOVE them and I am curious!).

Kim is here. The kids are spazzing out. They are SO excited their heads are about to explode. It's almost funny. Sigh.

Yesterday we spent the day with my friend Anne and her grandson. And then spent the evening knitting with friends--awesome! I came home, and Jamey had bought me a tripod--yip! I detail WHY I need one on my other blog.

All Blowed Up

Sorry for the outage this weekend (and Monday). There was a "wee" problem at our hosting site: one of their transformers blew and while there was no damage done to the data, they were without power. Fun fun. Good thing I don't depend on this site for any sort of income. Hopefully my dozen readers come back.

On to news from the weekend. Micci is growing up and has his first loose tooth. Woot! My sister, Kim, is just days away from her "visit." This visit hopefully will lead to her permanently moving down here. (San Antonio is an easier place to become independent than D.C.) The kids are super excited about her visit. For my part: it will very very interesting and I am sure will create all sorts of blog fodder.

We all saw Prince Caspian yesterday. Great movie. And of course it inspired me to start the next book, Voyage of the Dawn Treader. For some reason, it is much more interesting now than it was a years ago when I tried reading it. Shrug.

And better news: I haven't bought diapers in WEEKS!! Woot! And if we do have more kids, I am doing cloth. I am tired of the waste of diapers, not to mention the expense. Lori isn't completely potty trained--she still has accidents every day, but those are out numbered by successful visits to the potty. Woot woot!

Reading lately

I bought Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali on Friday night and devoured it by Saturday evening. Awesome, awesome book. I highly recommend going out and reading it it straight away. It's a remarkable story of a woman inside Islam and where her strong spirit takes her. Here is a wikipedia entry detailing her life. But reading it in her own words is just inspiring and eye-opening.

I picked up A History of The Wife by Marylin Yalom at the library when I went out with Phisto last Tuesday--also very interesting. I am only a quarter into it, but also very excellent. The idea of marriage and our role as women in it also eye opening.

Both books taken together--certainly gives me pause.
